 | Good Ol' Girls, Boys Oppose DA Change [Eureka Reporter Editorial] |
February 20, 2004
It is too bad that such a potentially great employer would seek to remove from political office a district attorney that the people duly elected, but that is exactly what The Pacific Lumber Co. is attempting to do.
First, it paid for signature-gatherers to gather enough signatures to place the recall measure on the ballot. Next, when it looked as if public opinion was about evenly matched for and against the recall, PALCO dumped even more into the recall race.
If PALCO wants its day in court, as its President Robert Manne says, then why is it trying to remove a district attorney who filed the lawsuit alleging civil violations? Why not just wait and see what happens in court?
Does anyone really believe that PALCO is funding the recall movement because it is concerned about crime? Are tree-sitters committing that much crime against powerful PALCO?
Even though Worth Dikeman says he will continue the lawsuit against PALCO, how do we know if Dikeman will really pursue the lawsuit àor will it die on the vine because of a lack of commitment?
Paul Gallegos has stood the test of time, although that is not to say that Gallegos hasn't made mistakes. He probably has, but name one district attorney in this county's history, including former District Attorney Terry Farmer, who hasn't made mistakes.
In Farmer's race against Mike Mock in the 1980s, it was alleged that Farmer was soft on drug-related crimes during his first term as district attorney.
At the time, Mock said he had the support of most of the law-enforcement community.
Mock also said Farmer lacked aggressive prosecution and a tendency of Farmer to accept plea bargains in narcotics cases.
Some legal secretaries in Farmer's office even quit because they alleged the office under Farmer was inefficient and that working conditions were unacceptable.
Today, Gallegos faces some of the same law-enforcement-generated opposition that Farmer did. He has been demonized in some media by haphazard reporting. False claims against Gallegos in advertisements have gone unchallenged for the most part, except here in The Eureka Reporter.
So the recall machine rolls on. It is politics as usual in Humboldt County, where the good old boys and the good old girls do not want to lose their reign on power. They could not accept Farmer's loss so they manufactured a recall and PALCO funded it. It was a match made in hell.
Vote no on the recall on March 2.
